Wrexham's rapid rise up the football pyramid has been well documented and they wanted to broach Europe, despite not playing in the Premier League. Clubs put forward a proposal to introduce a new Welsh League Cup from next season that would provide an additional pathway into the continental competition for Welsh clubs. But the Red Dragons have had their dreams shattered by the FA, who are set to block the project.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The English Football League have raised objections to the request, according to despite being presented with the argument that the competition would generate £3 million per year. UEFA gave its approval and confirmed the winners of the competition would be granted a place in the qualifying rounds of the Europa Conference League. The main concerns are that the integrity of other EFL competitions would be damaged and that Welsh clubs would opt out in a bid to qualify for Europe away from the traditional League Cup.
